Over the past 40 years, significant advancements have been made in the diagnosis and
management of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) disease. Despite these advancements,
neonatal HSV disease continues to be associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality.
In the early 2000s, approximately 1500 infants out of an estimated 4 million births were
diagnosed with neonatal HSV disease each year (approximately 3.75 per 10,000 births). 1
The incidence rate has continued to rise over the past
