MATERIALS AND METHODS Mitochondria used in these studies were isolated (27) from
livers obtained from male Sprague-Dawley rats (200-250 g) fed a standard laboratory chow
ad libitum. The liver was homogenized in a medium consisting of mannitol, 0.225 M;
sucrose, 0.075 M; and ethylene glycol bis (P-arninoethy1 ether)-N, N, N', N'-tetraacetate (0.1
mM). Subsequent washings and the final resuspension employed a similar medium
